The Ethical Software Framework is an approach developed by Pau&Company to explore what makes software more responsible and how Responsible Technology practices can be applied in real systems.
It provides organisations, developers and decision makers with a clear and structured way to analyse technology choices, understand their implications and make more informed decisions.
It is relevant for:
- Organisations making decisions around software and digital infrastructure
- Developers and technical teams designing or implementing systems
- Teams designing new systems from the early stages of the software lifecycle
- Decision makers working on technology strategy and governance
- Organisations reviewing, changing or scaling their technology systems
- Organisations adapting to new regulatory requirements or technology challenges
The framework analyses technology in its organisational context, considering how systems are designed, implemented, governed and used in practice.
It brings together three sources of insight that are often considered separately:
• Legal and regulatory requirements
• Social and stakeholder expectations
• The technical reality of the system being analysed
By considering these together, organisations can better understand the implications of their technology choices, identify risks and trade offs and make decisions that are more aligned with their objectives and responsibilities.
The framework provides a working definition of how we understand Responsible Technology at Pau&Company and it is currently used as the basis for the services we offer.
It is an ongoing research and practice initiative and is being further developed through collaboration with researchers at the University of Liverpool, exploring how elements of the methodology can be formalised and supported through computational approaches.
The framework currently focuses on four key areas that are central to current discussions around Responsible Technology:
- Digital Privacy
- Cybersecurity
- Environmental Impact of IT
- Responsible use of AI
It can also evolve over time to include additional areas where ethics and technology intersect, such as licensing, accessibility, societal impact, business models, business structures and other emerging concerns.
The Ethical Software Framework aims to create a shared foundation for organisations and initiatives working on different aspects of software ethics, supporting collaboration, knowledge sharing and collective progress towards more responsible technology.
